Book Review
The Outcast
This booked kept me hooked. The prose is beautifully written and the 1950's scorching heat of summer is the continuously evocative backdrop throughout the book that helps you feel and live the book (how I long for those hot summers - where have they gone?) You get lulled into a false sense of security by what you assume will be a quaint story, appropriate for the 1950s and are therefore particularly shocked when it starts to get dark, sinister, violent and sexual. My critisism is that the plot is loser than it should be. She could have cut the book down by 1/3 and have captured the story more tightly. But I felt lost when it was finished. Think I will read The Book Thief now - based on the rave reviews.

A great read. I do tend to agree with Kate C that it could have been cut a bit. Having said that, it is a very easy book to read that keeps you captivated and slightly on edge the whole way through. Definitely worth a read.
