Shantaram

by Gregory David Roberts

With over 900 pages to get through this book is a real journey. I don't normally read this kind of book (I prefer to escape into a fictional world) but once I'd started I found it compelling reading. The story is written by Gregory Roberts - an escapee from a prison in Australia. Lin (the name given to him by an Indian friend) writes about the travels, trials and relationships of his fugitive life in Bombay over a period of 8 years.

It combines fast-paced action and drama with many philosphical questions that really make you think.

So, when you have another holiday coming up or if you've found a bit of extra time with the children back at school, give this one a go. You won't regret it.
